First Case filed in California for Greenwashing

“The People bring this action against companies that are falsely or deceptively labeling 26 and/or marketing plastic beverage containers as “biodegradable” and “recyclable,” in violation of 27 California law. The advertising and marketing practices of these companies are misleading to California consumers and businesses, and potentially harmful to the environment.”

And so begins the first case by the State of California against companies for misleading “green” advertising.

This isn’t a trumped up greenwash claim. Three years ago I put a bio-degradable bottle into my compost bin — two years later, it still didn’t show any indication that it was going to decompose.

We want to help make this planet more sustainable and safe, but we can’t do our half of the job when the solutions as weak as their slogans.
