Three Women Threaten Enbridge

Screen Shot 2014-02-03 at 12.11.11 PMWow. Who would have thought that three women could be so scary.

Lansing, MI – Three activists from Michigan Coalition Against Tar Sands (MI-CATS) were found guilty Friday in an Ingham County court on charges of trespassing and resisting and obstructing a police officer. The verdict followed a September protest against Enbridge’s tar sands pipeline. The three face sentences of 2-3 years. Though not considered a flight risk, the three women were denied bail and are forced to remain in custody until sentencing on March 5, 2014. [emphasis mine] More…

Screen Shot 2014-02-03 at 12.42.52 PMThe MICATS Three* (Vicci Hamlin, Lisa Leggio, and Barbara Carter) put their beliefs on the line – trying to block pipeline catastrophes from happening starting with land being destroyed during the extraction process, then the burned fossil fuels adding to global warming.  Secondly (or firstly) If the pipelines rupture along the path, they spill toxic tar sand sludge into our fresh water system.  That’s not good for people, planet, or profits.

Fortunately for the Enbridge Corporation, it will never die from the toxic waste it generates affecting global and local health. While people live and die, the mission of the corporation will live on…

Let’s stop and think about that for a minute, the designers of our constitution put in term limits to protect the newly formed nation from monarchies, yet when the Supreme Court took away “limits” from corporations enabling them do just that, act like monarchs, i.e. to buy, terrorize, jail, and even kill those who oppose them — at least kings die or could be dethroned.

It gets worse…

Judge Collette wanted to make an example of the MICATS Three* and “denied bail”. That’s not a judgement based on common sense — even Bernie Madoff had bail set and he was still free after failing to meet the bail terms, so why did he do it? Just saying…

Bernard L. Madoff, the New York financier who authorities say has confessed to a $50 billion Ponzi scheme, will not be going to jail even though he failed to meet the original terms of his $10 million bail agreement. More…

It’s ironic that we send troops to other countries to fight for democracy and freedom, while democracy and freedom to survive is being stripped from us on our own soil. Thousands are heading to the streets to protest the tar sands pipeline tonight. Where are the thousands supporting the corporations? Where are their signs? Why are the decisions to keep the KXL tar sands pipeline made behind closed doors where corporate lobbyist are chained to their favorite politician?  Is that the kind of democracy our sons and daughters are dying to preserve? This pipeline signifies a lot more coming down the pipe…

Three women carrying (not guns), but compassion for the next generation are being held in jail prior to their sentencing on March 5. Send President Obama your message on their behalf. The judge silence three women, but he didn’t silence you. Please sign the letter and make your voice heard. The Keystone Pipeline is not only bad for the environment, it’s bad for a nation founded on “We the People,” not We the Monarchs.

Under full disclosure, while I currently live in Orange County, I also lived in Kalamazoo, MI for 20 years and want to retire in Michigan. The cleanup of the Enbridge tarsands spill into the Kalamazoo River has going on three years at a cost of over $1 billion. Before I buy a home or land, I take a hard look at every river, watershed, aquifer, and even city water of “Pure Michigan.” Time to retire that slogan. Thanks Enbridge.

*The MICAT Three will be locked away for a month, please write them a note of support here.

  1. Thanks Mary, for helping to highlight some of the “heroes” regular folks who are standing up and being counted. You help us see, so very clearly, the flaws and inequalities of our current justice system, and the absurdness that the subjectivity of the judgments allow..

    • Common sense in our judicial system died when the Supreme Court decided that corporations are people. Clearly Collette has a personal ax to grind that has nothing to do with the punishment fitting the crime.
