Joan Blades is a software/entrepreneur and cultural change agent most notable for being the co-founder, with husband Wes Boyd, of MoveOn.org. (5 million followers), and with Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner, MomsRising.org (1 million followers).
She co-authored the precursor to MomsRising.org, a book titled, “The Motherhood Manifesto” which won the Ernesta Drinker Ballard Book Prize in 2007. To enhance the workplace further, she co-wrote, “The Custom-Fit Workplace: Choose When Where and How to Work and Boost Your Bottom Line,” . It was published on Labor Day 2010 as a business book that describes a menu of opportunities on how businesses can benefit by using work practices that better fit the modern work force. Flexibility, tel-communting, non-linear career tracks and high commitment work practices allow businesses to save money, decrease carbon footprints, and improve productivity. To further spread her ideals, she has been a contributing writer for Huffington Post since 2005.
Joan is a passionate believer in the power of citizens and our need to rebuild a respectful, civil discourse online and off. To enhance the face-to-face dialog, she co-created Living Room Conversations a format to use when holding discussions on differing positions as they apply to climate change and other heated topics. Joan is a former attorney/mediator, who taught mediation at Golden Gate Law School.
Joan is a lover of nature, a mother, and a co-founder of Berkeley Systems where she was the Vice President of Marketing.
